A change of the stole ceremony is a sacred tradition and unique ceremony, the 1st Cavalry Division's commander said last week at Fort Hood.  Change of command ceremonies are common in the Army, and Maj. Gen. Daniel Allyn said a change of stole was far more important than a change of command because it marked the passing of responsibility for the spiritual sustenance of the division's soldiers and families.

Roland Bainton, who died in 1984, was a fixture at the Yale Divinity School for more than four decades and remained an influential Church historian over during two decades of retirement. His most popular book was Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther; but Luther scholarship has gone far beyond Bainton since Here I Stand was published in 1950. Bainton’s Christian Attitudes Toward War and Peace, however, which was first published in 1960, continues to exert a significant influence on Christian thought today. The question is whether that influence is helpful, or baleful.

Washington DC 9June10 (CNA/EWTN News)- The “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy barring open homosexuals from serving in the military should not be changed, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese for the Military Services said on Tuesday. Noting the need for strong rules against immoral activity, he said moral beliefs should not be sacrificed for “merely political considerations.”

Saint Maximilian Kolbe, the Polish Franciscan priest, missionary and martyr, will soon be celebrated throughout the Church on his feast day, August 14. The saint died in the concentration camp at Auschwitz, during World War II, and is remembered as a “martyr of charity” for dying in place of another prisoner who had a wife and children. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1982.

LETNICA/LETNICE, Kosovo - A Roman Catholic chaplain from Multinational Battle Group East led a Mass at the renowned Shrine of the Black Madonna, June 12, for United States KFOR Soldiers.
     Capt. Timothy Meier, chaplain, Los Altos, Calif., said that while KFOR chaplains have joined local priests in celebrating Mass at area churches before, this mass was unique because it was held in English specifically for U.S. KFOR troops.
