"It's important for a pastor to be with his faithful to look after his flock," said Broglio about his visit. "Coming here is the best way for me to know how they're doing, to hear about their experiences and learn how to serve them better."
During his time at Camp Lemonnier Broglio held Catholic Mass Saturday evening and Sunday morning, with the morning service celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation. "It was quite an honor for him to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation during Sunday's service," said Lt. Cmdr. Robert Cain, a U.S. Navy Chaplain at Camp Lemonnier. "This is a very important ceremony in the Catholic faith; it's when one receives the Holy Spirit." He also spent time touring Djibouti City, celebrating Catholic Mass at the local Djiboutian cathedral, visiting the Franciscan Sisters orphanage and the Boulaos School. "The Mass at the cathedral went well," said Broglio. "It was a nice opportunity to celebrate with the local community and get to meet with them after the service." One of the differences between being an archbishop for the military as opposed to being an archbishop for civilians is who he serves. "I have all Catholics on active duty and their families to look after, which I consider a blessing. People in the military are amazing and this community always has an active role in the church when they're deployed and back at home in the states." During the next few months, the archbishop is slated to visit Japan and prepare to particiate in the International Pilgrimage of the Lord in France, which starts in April. |
