A small percentage of brave American servicemen have rifles pointed downrange. Most are fully engaged in humanitarian and reconstruction efforts. The mission: rebuild Afghanistan and Iraq after years of tyrannical oppression and neglect “Over There.”

FOB MARJAH, Helmand province, Afghanistan – The mortarmen with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, live a regulated and precise life - one where they can all be assured that at the end of each day, the following morning they will awake to do it all over again, at Forward Operating Base Marjah, Afghanistan. Their day begins as early as 5 a.m., and ends as late as 1 a.m.

BAGHDAD – Soldiers assigned to 1st Advise and Assist Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division gathered together May 6 for a luncheon to observe the National Day of Prayer at Contingency Operating Station Falcon. Soldiers were treated to the luncheon, so they too could celebrate, even while deployed.

FOB WOLVERINE, Afghanistan - Lit solely by headlamps, an illuminated fog rolls with every breath the chaplain speaks. Nearly midnight with Christmas approaching, a small group of deployed service members sit on the cold rocks of the helicopter landing pad huddled in a circle to hold a Catholic Mass. "Mass can be held anytime, anywhere," said Capt. Carl Subler, a Catholic chaplain with the 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. "For Catholics, receiving Holy Communion is essential to their faith. Celebrating Mass in the field for the soldiers gives them a chance to do that, when otherwise they would go months without the sacraments."
